You can see my newest installation outside at Harbourfront Centre 24/7.
This autumn, I am one of a number of visual artists whose work is animating Harbourfront Centre’s site throughout the fall of 2020. You can wander throughout our campus to encounter moments of playfulness, joy and hope through these installations.
The imagery for this installation is based on an ongoing series entitled Sample Wall and is a record of the vital role it plays in my studio practice. I create samples to test ideas, colours and techniques as a starting point. Whether it is preparing to teach a workshop, the beginnings of a new piece or working towards an exhibition, I refer to these samples as a source of inspiration.
SKETCH, SAMPLE, SEW utilizes tests, samples and sketches from the past 10 years of working in my studio. I arranged my embroideries of geometry, botany and household objects into clusters, mixing pieces from early experiments in 2007 with recent samples for this large-scale project. The groupings were scanned at high resolution, printed on hundreds of pieces of fabric and hand cut into irregular shapes to create a colourful collage within the treetops.
Exhibition runs from September 18–December 31, 2020
