Studio: Digital Embroidery Sketches

Studio: Digital Embroidery Sketches

I’ve been working in the studio for the past few weeks and I’m getting familiar with my new Bernina 780 Digital Embroidery machine.  As an exercise to get me started, I’m working from drawings on paper of close up images of textile structures.  I’ve been testing different colours, different types of thread and different densities of stitch.

I make these pieces by scanning my drawings into the computer program and then carefully tracing my lines with my mouse, creating a path for the machine to follow.  This becomes my digital embroidery file. I can then transfer that file to the machine.

Like any new technique, learning takes time. I’m testing and sampling and hoping to make playful experiments to see what is possible with this brand new machine.
