Here are some images of Neon Clouds which are up with my Ice Crystals as a part of the exhibition Eye of the Needle: Johnathan Brilliant & Amanda McCavour. This exhibition opened on Thursday and will be up at the Taubman Museum of Art until August 28th, 2016.
Exhibition Statement:
Exploring the notions of organized chaos, Eye of the Needle features two site-specific installations by renowned contemporary artists, Jonathan Brilliant and Amanda McCavour, created for the Taubman Museum of Art. Using simple readymade materials in complex ways, each artist will address issues of impermanence and fragility in their work.
Jonathan Brilliant, a North Carolina based artist, creates intricate large scale woven sculptures out of coffee stick stirrers and other coffee related implements. Brilliant exploits the inherent strength of coffee stick stirrers by weaving and contorting them into “drawings in space.” Toronto-based artist Amanda McCavour draws with thread to stitch together immense embroidered installations. Using a sewing machine to create her intricately delicate installations, she sews lines into fabric that dissolves in water. With only the thread remaining, her installations appear as though they are on the verge of unraveling. Each artist will transform the inherent qualities of their materials in front of visitors in fascinating ways.
Brilliant holds a B.A. in studio art from the College of Charleston and an M.F.A. in Spatial Arts from San Jose State University, is a recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation artist grant and is a South Carolina Arts Commission Visual Arts Fellow. He has exhibited his work in several group and solo exhibitions nationally and internationally. McCavour holds a BFA from York University, Toronto, Ontario in drawing and installation and an MFA in Fibers and Material Studies at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. McCavour’s work has been shown in galleries and museums in the United States and abroad. She has received awards and scholarships from the Ontario Crafts Council, The Handweavers and Spinners Guild of America, and The Embroiderers Guild of America for her work.
Eye of the Needle is curated by Amy G. Moorefield, Deputy Director of Exhibitions and Collections at the Taubman Museum of Art. This exhibition will be on display March 18 – August 28, 2016 in the Medical Facilities of America Gallery and Temporary Exhibition Gallery.
