From January 18th to February 8th, 2016 I was the artist in Residence at Gros Morne National Park through the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador. The residency experience at allowed me time to plan out future projects based on rocks and minerals. I didn’t take my sewing machine with me to snowy Newfoundland and this offered me the opportunity to step out of my regular studio practice to explore drawing on papers and alternative surfaces along with sculpting with wire wrapped in linen to create lines in space. I think that this material research will lead to a new body of work incorporating drawing, sculpture and embroidery.
The environment of Gros Morne affected my colour schemes and the forms I made while completing the residency. In my samples and small scale work I used a lot of grey, white and black which corresponded to the grey days and snow covered mountains. I would use pops of colour like icy blue or mint green reflecting the unexpected colours in the landscape at sunset or sunrise and the painted homes within Woody Point.
